Teen Cupcake Decorating Party
This teen cupcake decorating party was a huge hit with my daughter and her 14 year old friends. Remember the teenage afternoon tea party that I posted about last month? This was phase two – ‘The Activity’ We did a version of this for younger kids a few years ago, but we updated it a bit by making 12 ‘examples’ of easy things for the girls to recreate.
Or of course let them make their own creative edible masterpieces.
Cup Cake List
- Owl with Feathers
- Chocolate Brown Bear
- Polar Bear
- Panda
- Cute Bumble Bee
- Kitten
- Bunny ‘Bum’
- Unicorn
- Pig in Mud
- Flamingo
- Monkey
- Fluffy Lamb
Materials
- At least 8-10 cupcakes per person.
- A range of butter icing, and royal icing
- Fondant icing. Only small amounts of each colour are actually needed. our supermarket had a few multi packs with 4 different colours that were perfect for us. (We used white, pink, brown, black, red, yellow, blue and green)
- A selection of sweets and decorations including candy bananas, shrimp, carrots, chocolate buttons and mini marshmallows, as well as sprinkles, glitter
An itemised ‘kit list’ is detailed along with photos and instruction for how to recreate each cupcake is detailed below.
Method
This is an update of a sophisticated kids cupcake decorating party we did for Abbi’s 9th birthday around 5 years ago. 9 year olds are a little easier to impress than 14 year olds, so we had to update our cupcake decorating game a little this time.
The principle was the same. A large heap of cupcakes (vanilla, chocolate and red velvet) along with loads of icing, and toppings, however this time we made examples for the girls to recreate. Or not, of they wanted to make their own creations. We printed out photos and instructions, and posted them on the windows so the girls could use them as reference points. The 12 examples we made are detailed below.

After their afternoon tea, the girls got well and truly stuck in. They came straight from school on a friday night hence the school uniforms! They took around an hour, to an hour and a half on the cupcakes. Some of them would have happily sat for another hour making cupcakes, but others were starting to get fidgety.
I would suggest allowing no more than an hour and a half or at a push 2 hours for this reason.
Each of the girls ‘creations’ were put on a their own cake board as they finished them.
Some followed the instructions pretty slavishly.
Some went completely off piste.
And others did their own very creative masterpieces, like Ella ‘Bean’. Love the gruffalo, peas in a pod, minion and rainbow.
There was a fair amount of nibblage going on, but each girl took around 7-8 cakes home each. The cake trays were wrapped in cellophane to make them look spectacular, and for easy transportation. Obviously its a teen party, so lots of snap chatting and instagramming of the results.
